Adobe/Cob Oven

Creating the base for the Adobe oven

The Cob oven has just done it’s 6th season. It has allowed people to cook probably thousands of meals. As well as that, it makes a great spot to socialise whilst cooking.
The oven is usually hot from about May to September, outside of those months, there have to be enough people on site wanting to fire it up. It is so big it can take 2-3 hours to get up to heat from a cold start.

There are so many names, cob oven, pizza oven, bread oven, wood fired oven i think my personal favourite is now an Adobe oven.

We had been collecting materials for ages, years in fact. It was with the help of Jessica who teaches adobe oven construction, that we held a course here at the brickyard.

We had already constructed the base for the oven so the course just worked on the floor of the oven, the former to create the shape and the first layer of cob.

There were some fantastic days mixing and adding the two further layers of cob which need a week to dry before the next layer can go on.

Making the floor of the oven
A really great day working together
Mixing the Cob
Making cob balls
making the former
The Team on the first day
Shaping the first layer of cob
The completed oven after two more layers
the only thing left to do it ass some wings
Once it’s dried out it will be ready to cook in.

and here is some of the food everyone cooks with the oven.

The Brickyard

The brickyard is a wild camping location run by Tim and his wife Catherine. We don't have many facilities other than the essentials. Camp-fires are allowed and you can't get much closer to nature, have a look at our gallery pages.
